[$] Plasma X11 session removal surprises some Fedora users
The KDE Project announced, in 2025, that Plasma 6.7 would be the last version of the desktop environment that would support X11 sessions. Those who keep up with KDE's announcements no doubt expected it when Plasma 6.8 dropped X11 support as promised. What seems to have come as a surprise, at least to a number of Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop users, is that the Fedora 44 release—which shipped in April with Plasma 6.6 —received an update to Plasma 6.8 that swept away the X11 session without much warning. Despite the surprise, it is gone for good: the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee

datasette-agent 0.5a0
Release: datasette-agent 0.5a0 This is a significant release of Datasette Agent . The most notable new feature is called the panel - it lets the agent chat open and then sit next to pages from Datasette, for example a table or query page. When combined with datasette-apps this means you can prompt a database-backed app into existence and then modify it from the chat that sits next to that app. You can try it by signing in with your GitHub account to agent.datasette.io . datasette-apps 0.3a0
Release: datasette-apps 0.3a0 Datasette Apps adds support for hosting and editing custom HTML applications inside of Datasette. These can be created by hand, but it's easier to create them using LLMs via Datasette Agent . This release improves that integration: Apps can now be tagged in Datasette Agent chat messages by typing # , which autocompletes from the apps the user has permission to view. New app_add_stored_queries() and app_remove_stored_queries() tools let the agent manage which stored queries an app is allowed to call. Granting a write query requires approval from the user first. app

‘Political Reckoning Shatters Trump’s Grip on Washington’
Aaron Zitner, reporting for the Rupert Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal: Rarely in American politics has a president traded away so much political support so quickly. The losses that Republicans suffered on Tuesday marked one of the most decisive repudiations of a president in modern history. President Trump had re-entered the White House with advantages he lacked in his first term: a victory in the popular vote, a cadre of aides eager to expand his authority and cultural currency that had NFL players doing the “Trump dance” in the end zone. Only two years later, his political standing has co

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Guardian: Canva is cutting or relocating more than 1,200 jobs, representing 22% of its global workforce, as part of a major restructure that includes laying off staff who helped build the Australian-founded design platform. The changes mirror a trend across the technology sector, where software companies are fighting to stay competitive against cheaper artificial intelligence disrupters while aggressively embedding AI tools themselves. [...] The restructure will affect 1,271 people, according to the company, as it focuses on "collapsing layers" and

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group plans to launch Emut Bank in early 2027 as the first digital bank affiliated with a major Japanese financial institution to eliminate ATM cards, "instead having customers confirm identities using the bank's smartphone app for additional security amid a rising tide of cyberattacks," reports Nikkei Asia Review. The smartphone app will also be the only way to manage deposits, with no PC-based banking. From the report: Security has become a greater concern recently. As artificial intelligence advances, Japan has seen a surge in cyberattacks targeting companies, as we

AMD expects its fourth-quarter revenue to reach roughly $17 billion, potentially surpassing Intel's projected $15 billion to $16 billion and putting AMD ahead of its longtime rival in quarterly sales for the first time. The milestone is being driven largely by booming demand for Epyc server processors and Instinct AI accelerators, with AMD's data center business already accounting for 64% of revenue and expected to exceed 80% in 2027. Tom's Hardware reports: For those of our readers who have been following the CPU market in general as well as AMD and Intel in particular for decades, arguably t

French Blood Banks Hit Alongside Cyberattack On European Supermarkets
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: The refrigerators at three regional blood banks in France were hit by a cyberattack overnight between Sunday and Monday, at the same time hackers struck supermarkets from Sweden to Belgium. "Several regional facilities of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) were affected by a cybersecurity incident that impacted certain cold storage room monitoring and control systems," the health ministry said in a statement.
