Why Spending Money Feels Different When You Don’t See It Leave Your Hands
Cash, digital payments, and the surprising way technology shapes how we experience spending. It started with a post I came across about someone buying a watch worth ₹12,000. I found myself thinking about the purchase, so I brought it up with a friend. What began as an ordinary conversation about an expensive watch took an unexpected turn: my friend told me he had received a watch worth ₹30,000 as a gift. That made me think about something interesting. One person had spent ₹12,000 on a watch. Another had received a watch worth ₹30,000 without paying for it himself. The watches had monetary valu

Product design with AI: our job is about setting our standard for AI
TLDR: AI can do a lot of what designers used to do, and it’s easy to feel replaced. One analogy I heard encouraged me to think it’s less about losing our jobs and more about knowing our own standard of work well enough to teach it to AI. Even my mom talks about AI Everyone hears about AI, and everyone talks about AI. I walk down the street and hear people talking about it. Even my mom talks about AI. Her new hobby is sending me AI-generated memes, which is quite sweet, to be honest. This is an opinion I shared with my design team recently, about what all this means for us. Underneath the noise

This is how I work with AI as a Designer right now.
TLDR: This is what my actual day-to-day workflow with AI looks like right now, skill by skill: ideating an idea deeply before writing any code, turning it into tickets an agent can run, branching into a few prototypes before committing to one, then bringing in style and polish last. The way I used to work For a long time, my way of working with AI was just stacking prompts. I’d write one, wait, look at what came back, give a note. Then often remember a second thing I’d forgotten and have to write another prompt just for that. The context window kept getting longer, and I never knew how many pr

You’ve Designed the Story, But How Does It Unfold?
Why designers need to understand performance, critical paths and what happens before information reaches the screen. The experience we design is only what happens on stage. Behind it, a whole system of dependencies determines when the performance can begin. Back in 2014, I wrote an article about why we put CSS in the head of an HTML document . It explored the browser’s critical rendering path, and how something as seemingly simple as putting CSS directly into a page rather than loading an external stylesheet could affect how quickly that page appeared. At the time, I was working primarily in f

The Next UX Problem: What If AI Does Exactly What We Asked, But Not What We Meant?
We wanted AI to save us time. But what happens when it starts making decisions on our behalf? Imagine this. You open an AI assistant and type: “Find me a good hotel for my weekend trip. Compare the prices, check the reviews, and book the best option.” A few minutes later, the AI comes back. It found three hotels, compared their prices, checked their ratings, selected one, and completed the booking. Everything happened without you opening another tab. Sounds wonderful, right? Now imagine discovering that the hotel is 20 kilometres away from the city centre. The AI selected it because it was che
